When you have enough

Worrying about bills is never something I want anyone to experience. I remember three years ago when I was going through a phase where every dollar I earned was allocated to a particular bill due at the end of the month, leaving me with nothing. Some months, when insurance or car payments were due, I was in the negative by thousands and had to borrow money from friends so my credit card wouldn’t charge me interest.

It’s been a journey going from there to now no longer being in the negative or worrying about bills at the end of the month. I’m still not in the millions where I don’t worry about bills ever, but life has been kind.

On my recent trip to India, though, I met a friend who has enough. Enough that he does not need to worry about regular bills for the rest of his life. I was curious about what he does with his time, now that bills are no longer a concern and he doesn’t have to work. Now that he doesn’t have to travel for work or attend any meetings, I wanted to get a glimpse of what life looks like on the other side.

He spent his time investing in other properties. Moving money from one building or office space to another, waiting to see when property prices increased, and selling to buy another expensive property somewhere else.

Walking away from the discussion made me think about what my life would possibly look like when I have enough. I always wanted to travel more; would I travel more? Would I worry about losing it all? Would I just spend time building software for the fun of building software? Swim at different locations around the world? Join friends and family on their trips and spend more time with them? Or maybe a combination of all of the above. Definitely this.
